For sale: the iconic Miska bear – the beloved mascot of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics. Miska (also known as Misha and Mishka) is one of the best-known Olympic mascots, and also the first character to be widely merchandised at major sporting events. The mascot was designed by Russian illustrator Viktor Tizikov, and it quickly became a huge phenomenon. The Miska character appeared on stamps, badges, plush toys, clothing and other collectibles. Animations were also made around the character: – A short animated film by Soyuzmultfilm – A 26-episode series by Nippon Animation (1979–1980) Miska featured prominently at the opening ceremony of the 1980 Games and especially at the moving closing ceremony, where the legendary “tearful Miska” can be seen – the choreography was created in the stadium stands using color cards.
